One Key Concept in Design

A key element in design is implementing repetition with variety. It sounds a bit ironic. How can discord and harmony compliment on another? Let me explain:
I find this sunset triptych to be calm and relaxing, while the splash of the wave on the left adds a touch of interest - repition with variety.

Now, notice by removing the wave, the mood changes. The soothing horizontal seems to dominate the composition. Sometimes in an art, too much symmetry can lull you right to sleep.

Add a punch of color, movement or texture and the rhythm perks up a notch. In the evenly balanced birch trees below, the red cardinal is the spark that adds variety to the harmony. Do you enjoy a bit more interest in your life or do you like consistency. You can relfect your personality in your art choices.
